The 22-page Style Book of the Manchester Guardian [1.1MB PDF], 75 years ago. On the cover it says 'Style Book' and on the title page 'Style-Book'. Some poor sub got ticked off for that one.

Compare with the present style guide. Not only has the guardian developed a severe phobia for capitals ('the home secretary') but its preoccupations have changed since the careful guide to the new Government of the Irish Free State, the nomenclature of servants and the injunction 'trousers - not trouser or trowsers'.

Given the quote
actor
male and female; avoid actress except when in name of award (eg Oscar for best actress)
One 27-year-old female actor contacted the Guardian to say "actress" has acquired a faintly pejorative tinge, and wants people to call her actor, except for her agent who should call her often
it is now a goal of mine to get a similar entry in the next style guide
game show
Not gameshow as in previous style guides
One 28-year-old game show fan contacted the Guardian to say "gameshow" has acquired a faintly horrible tinge, and wants people to call them game shows, except for Wright Around The World which should be called "a piece of stinking crap"

i swear i linked this one a month ago or so. liked the autism entry, well, no, didn't.

bought the guardian for the first time EVAH this morning, they gave me a goodie bag with coffee and a mug and a CD i'm never going to listen to. dunno if this is just a campus thing, i've stopped venturing out into the real world.

Imperial College now has a style guide. If you are a member of IC you are now not allowed to use the word 'cusp' in any external document, which is causing some of the mathematicians some problems.

On the cover it says 'Style Book' and on the title page 'Style-Book'.

Some things never change. Good old Grauniad.
