Junkshop pose
There are certain books that every charity shop must stock. Among these are Jaws by Peter Benchley, The White Hotel by D.M. Thomas, Shardik by Richard Adams and A.L. Kennedy's So I Am Glad (a freebie, I believe, in a misconceived women's magazine promotion).

The same is true of record stores. Castoffs and Cutouts: The Top 50 Most Common Used CDs has a US indie bias, but I still own six of the fifty. And I'm not ashamed.

you should be ashamed for reading pitchfork, though.

i've never seen any of the above in a charity store

Don't worry, I snagged the link from [info]thenulldevice. The ass end of the early 90s is unfortunately when my tastes were formed... and concreted.

Also beware disappearing into self-reference. Soon you'll be posting instant messaging transcripts between you and yourself.

(Thinks: INSTANT? MESSAGING?)

you think awful loud, mister

i'd just like to point out that when i do post IM transcripts where the only speaker is me that means i've deleted someone else, though i'm not sure if this is more or less bad than the alternative

What, no Richard Clayderman? No Joe Loss? No Syd Lawrence Orchestra? No Glenn Miller? (Actually, I bought all the Glenn Miller already.) The guy who compiled this list obviously lives in a different universe from me -- the last time I found anything really good in a charity shop was when I managed to pick up the 7" single of "The Final Countdown" for just 40p. They obviously saw me coming.

Unsurprisingly, you win in the Tragically Indie stakes, although I'm surprised you only have six of the records listed there. I only actually own three of the records on the list, although I've taped various others from the library and am still looking for copies of some of the others.

Richard Clayderman on compact disc? No, restricting it to CDs does restrict it to early 1990s dross in my experience: Carter USM, Flowered Up, The Tragically Indie, you know the drill.

Oh, yes, he did limit it to "CDs", didn't he. In my defence I plead that I didn't even own a CD player until 1997, so I automatically thought of vinyl when I saw those familiar old album-covers.

You wouldn't be impressed if I told you I owned a copy of Lush's "Lovelife" on clear vinyl, would you? No, I thought not.

Cripes, The White Hotel, aka Freudian Symbolism for Dummies. I hadn't thought about that book in years.

I'm pleased to report that your law is indeed universal, even unto the backwoods of Canada where I picked up a dog-eared Shardik for $3.50. Marvellously chewable, remaining undigested even after a transatlantic flight.

Hmm. Where are these bookshops ? You obviously visit different emporia to me.

Apart from Jaws, I'm not used to seeing any of the above. If you'd said Jilly Cooper's Polo, now, or Ivanhoe, or anything by E. E. 'Doc' Smith I'd have been right with you...

Recently I've been plagued by The French Lieutenant's Woman, but since it always seems to be the same copy I think this is more of a conspiracy than a universal effect.

There are always at least 3 copies of "4 Non Blondes" as well.

Australian charity shops are in on the conspiracy too, then, although there has been a recent tendency for them to substitute The French Lieutenant's Woman with The Magus, which is clearly better value, being longer and even more boring. In addition, we get Watership Down (though not Shardik), a dog-eared copy of The Female Eunuch, and an anthology whose title contains between two and four of these words or phrases, randomly selected from the available range: "Women's", "Victorian", "Nineteenth Century", "Ghost", "Tales", "Children's" and "Short Stories". The cover for this anthology is always the same, regardless of the title that chance has selected for it.

Hmm. That's odd. My nearest charity shop has an infestation of nineteenth century ghost tales at the moment.. sadly DM Thomas was represented by Pictures at an Exhbition rather than the White Hotel.

You forgot the many volumes of David Niven's autobiography, most commonly The Moon's A Balloon and Bring On The Empty Horses.

Garn. There's always at least one Barclay James Harvest CD in any charity store. And at least three Punch annuals. Oh, and The Joy of Sex (presumably donated by people who have either learned how to do it or decided not to bother).
