Maps (wait, they don't love you like I love you)

There seemed to be no LiveJournal community devoted to maps. So I present [info]cartographica. Join!

Even if you don't, you can help by coming up with interests that will snag mapfans - the closer to unique, the better. Have a look at the userinfo for [info]linguists for an idea of the hardcore jargon I'm after.

Thinking around it a bit (some are some distance away, I guess, do pick and choose, this is just brainstorming of things that come immediately to mind):

GIS, terrain, surveying, theodolite, sounding, nautical mile, sextant, compass, buoy, navigation, landmark, northing, easting, national grid, GPS, GLONAST, magnetic north, tumulus, x marks the spot, grid reference, doomsday book, shires, counties, borders, four colour theorem, isthmus, island, circumnavigation, latitude, longitude, altitude, spacial, visualisation, fractal geometry, data representation, demarkation.

Westing (by Musket and Sextant)

Superlative! Thank you, I've added nearly all of those; except 'isthmus', because I wasn't sure what the plural might be.

I hope New Agers won't be disappointed when they search for 'meridians'.

I think it ought to be isthmœ. Chambers(1983) doesn't list a plural, and my OED is in London.

Isthmuses and isthmi are both valid for Scrabble, but isthmi is only in the American source, isthmuses is in both. I'd go for isthmuses.

Isthmuses I have no quarrel with. Isthmi is like hippopotami (I think it probably ought to be hippapotamœ, although I admit that current usage does not support me);

Can you put fjord in there? (Or fiord, cos there's no Unicode standard ligature for "fj")

Possibly subconsciously.
