A home from home
A few years ago [info]verlaine observed how little we know of each other's lives at work, or rather, since we all talk about that part of our social life that happens at work, how little we know of the detail of the work itself. To rectify this, he invited us to post some text, or some jargon, or some account extracted from our working days. Alas, I can't find the entry again, but [info]fivemack reminded me of it by posting a photograph of his desk. So here's mine:

My desk

Note how the computer has displaced the books I catalogue off to one side, supported on their multi-part foam rests. The tools of my trade are few, several of them online, the rest a collection of reference books. At the moment the most important tool is the radiator.

And I must take the passport photo when I leave.

I'm jealous of the view from your desk. Even when I could see a bookshelf from my workdesk (which I currently can't) it was all uniform-with-every-volume-ever OhReally stuff. Those look like proper books with real words in them.

Irrelevantly, you may be interested to know that the layout of your journal completely baffles Skype. It sees phone numbers where there bain't none at all...

That's neat! I never expected that when I fixed the year to avoid the Y10K problem. Does this mean you can phone the future?

Mine is largely full of toys. V. important work playdoh. A paper on deja vu, the campus news letter, and notes on an electrophysiology paper can be seen poking around the work stuff. The pink monkey riding a turtle is possibly the most noticable though.

Along with the coffee mugs and stickers for an enzyme precipitation practical.

Oh, and my office mate's pussy is in the background.

Sums up my working life rather well I feel.

Now *those* are nice books! So pretty...much prettier than the books I have around me. *gazing around at stacks of textbooks sent from publishers*
